In rural communities throughout eastern Canada there is an annual event known as Mummering which is a traditional festival of fertility and is still celebrated in various parts of the world. Death of the old and rebirth to a new year, this celebration of life is a time of drinking, feasting, music and laughter and often involves the wearing of masks which discards pride and vaniety of the outward appearence, disguised to evoke the intrinsic nature of one's soul. I was inspired to create an illustration to commemorate this old-world celebration which is slowly loosing its place in the ignorance of modern society.
